KYOTO SLIDE SHOW powered by Photomusic and mupic

KYOTO SLIDE SHOW is a project that showcases slideshow videos by photographers and artists who live in Kyoto. They produced the video works using their photographs that captured the city from their unique viewpoints with a music generating software.

Kyoto, as well as many tourist destinations, has been suffering from the effects of the global pandemic of COVID-19. It is still difficult to go abroad due to travel restrictions in many countries. If we take into consideration that there was a situation where Kyoto had an inrush of tourists, which was called "overtourism", it seems that our time has retrogressed. But it can be said that the rich experience of staying in Kyoto was lost before the situation.

As the city with the history of 1,200 years, which is unparalleled in the world, Kyoto has survived various plagues, civil disturbances, and natural disasters. The current stagnation of the city's activity due to the crisis may be a small one if we consider that great history. This opportunity has allowed us not to take it for granted that we can travel anywhere anytime.

However, we have an apprehension that our imagination would disappear with this situation, even though various networks have already connected the world. A key to open the future to come might rest on how we creatively overcome this crisis by stirring up our imagination.

In this project, we asked the artists who are based in Kyoto to produce slideshow videos with their pictures taken in their daily lives in the city. They used the software PhotoMusc and the smartphone application mupic that generate music and slideshow video from colours on pictures.

Since 2000, a digital camera rapidly has taken a leading part, and the boundary between still image and moving image is disappearing. Consequently, there is a growing trend for photographers to create slideshows of their photographs, which has produced a different problem for them who cannot compose music for the slideshows. If they want to use a piece of existing music, they have to handle the rights of the use, while adjusting a slideshow perfectly to fit the mood and tempo of the music. And if the impression of the music itself is too strong, the photographs would become a mere accessory for the music.

PhotoMusic and mupic were invented to respond to such situations and to allow photographers to produce music by themselves. In the software and the app, colours of a picture transform into musical components, such as keys, chords, sounds of musical instruments, so that a user can intuitively compose and arrange the music. Using these functions, the artists produced their slideshow videos with their photographs for this project. Their works tell not only the content of the pictures but also imply what kind of sensibilities and emotions the artists had during their production process.

The works perhaps show sceneries of Kyoto that one has never seen before and arouse imaginations of viewers. Creativity makes Kyoto more prosperous and multifaceted for the future when people revisit the city. We hope that this project will represent the city's outstanding creative environment.

Kunihiko Katsumata: Artist

He graduated from Waseda University’s Faculty of Law. His works always touch on the structure of photography, capturing diverse objects while dealing with subtopics, such as time, light, place, space, and cognition. By scooping up a world that has already existed but not been perceived in everyday life, he has produced works that invite viewers to a new understanding of the world with metaphors of critical look at history, society, and civilization.

Tomas SVAB: Artist

Born in 1974, Prague, Czechia. He graduated from the department of photography at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Canada. The political situation was bleak, so his family emigrated to Canada when he was six years old. His idea of storytelling was deeply influenced by his family’s business of filmmaking and through an early education in photography from his father. Since he moved to Kyoto in 2007, he has discerned the images of the city that remind him of Prague—rhythm and pattern that reveal the unique character of the layered and seemingly random city of Kyoto and the people who live there.
